Shawna Lemay Review

Calm Things received a wonderful mention on Brenda Schmidt's blog, Alone on a Boreal Stage. Here is the first paragraph:

"Calm Things is indeed a gift

...in the fullest sense of the word. Calm Things by Shawna Lemay is the most beautifully written, generous and honest collection of personal essays that I've read in ages. Thought-provoking to say the least. Because the clean, pitch-perfect prose never calls attention to itself, I was left looking at a world through Lemay's eyes and with Lemay's clear, wide-angled vision. What I saw was a well-rounded world. A moving world. A world I both know and don't know."

Rascally Rhymes reviewed in Our Children

The Naming Book of Rascally Rhymes received a terrific review in Our Children: Halifax’s Family Magazine (winter 2009).

“Jordan Troutt has penned a witty and re-readable book of deadpan rhymes… With silly wit that’s a hairsbreadth from nonsense, Troutt seems to channel the spirit of Lewis Carroll… Sarah Preston-Bloor’s whimsical illustrations are an ideal complement to the verses, colourfully depicting wide-eyed little darlings in a variety of misadventures. This is the kind of book you’ll thumb through for a giggle even when the kids aren’t around.” (p.16)

Rascally Rhymes in Resource Links

The Naming Book of Rascally Rhymes received a glowing review in Resource Links: Connecting Classrooms, Libraries & Canadian Learning Resources (Volume 14.2). Here is just some of what the reviewer writes:

“…Troutt perfectly blends an upper level alphabet book with rhymes to produce a humorous selection of poetry. Each poem describes its namesake with clever wit… each poem has its own charm. The illustrations are expressive and go hand-in-hand with the poems. This collection of rhymes is very entertaining and full of silly fun, making it great for storytelling.” (p. 62)

The Eye of the Needle

I don’t remember a lot of from my dream last night, although the parts I do remember are quite disturbing. There was the whole bit about my feet being pushed into an oversized grater, but I think I’ve blocked most of that out. Toe zest, anyone?

The image I’ve carried with me all day is that of my body being used like a needle. I am holding my arms up above my head and clasping my hands together, so that my arms form an “o”. A thick piece of thread is being slid through them, like through the eye of a needle. I can see the large hands working around me, looping and tying the thread into a knot. I am silent and still.
